The Traditional Dress of Simaxis

Simaxis, known in Sardinian as Simàghis, is a village in the Campidano di Oristano, in the province of Oristano, situated in the central plain of western Sardinia a few kilometres from the provincial capital. According to local popular tradition, the name derives from Pope Symmachus (pontiff from 498 to 514 AD), whom legend holds was born in Simaxis itself; no historical documents, however, support this claim. Embedded in the agricultural and craft network of the Oristanese area, the village has preserved a rich heritage of traditional dress, an expression of the vibrant textile and goldsmithing tradition of the Campidano.

Simaxis is a municipality of the Campidano di Oristano, in the plain at the centre of western Sardinia. Embedded in the agricultural and craft circuit that gravitates around Oristano, the town has over time developed a traditional dress that shares the formal vocabulary of the great Campidanese tradition, while retaining its own characteristics that distinguish it from neighbouring centres.

The women's dress follows the Campidanese scheme in its layering of fabrics. The white linen shirt, with its worked cuffs and collar, is the base on which the ensemble is built. S’imbustu (the rigid bodice), in brocade or silk, structures the figure and enhances the posture. The outer jacket, made in cloth or velvet in tones of red or bordeaux, completes the upper part with sober yet refined decoration.

The skirt in cloth or orbace (traditional Sardinian pressed wool) is wide and pleated, marked by a lower band in silk or ribbon that adds movement to the ensemble. The apron, in silk or taffeta with vivid tones, is embroidered with floral motifs that bring the most luminous chromatic accent to the dress. Silver filigree jewellery and coral necklaces complete the outfit according to the Oristanese tradition, which assigns goldsmithing a central role in the expression of social and festive standing.

As throughout the Oristanese area, the dress of Simaxis is worn at patron saint festivals, processions and major regional folk events. The care taken in its generational transmission testifies to the deep bond between the community and its own cultural identity, of which the dress is one of the most immediate and proudly held expressions.
