What to expect at Festa Patronale Luras 2026

From 3 to 6 October 2026 Luras, a small town in inland Gallura perched among the granite outcrops of Monte Longu, lives the four most intense days of its religious and civic calendar with the Festa Patronale, a single major event that brings together three distinct devotions: Our Lady of the Rosary, the Madonna del Buon Cammino and Saint Francis. Organised by the Municipality of Luras together with the local Pro Loco, the festival weaves solemn Masses, processions accompanied by a marching band and folk groups, and a packed evening entertainment programme that fills the town’s streets late into the night.

The heart of the festival is Sunday 4 October, when the procession of Our Lady of the Rosary crosses the historic centre accompanied by numerous folk groups in traditional Sardinian costumes, coming from Luras itself and from neighbouring towns. On the following days, Monday and Tuesday, the celebrations continue in honour of the Madonna del Buon Cammino and Saint Francis, each with its own solemn Mass and procession.

Alongside the religious programme, the civic side offers entertainment for all ages: from the Fred De Palma concert on Saturday evening, to children’s games in the square, from the local football team’s match to the improvised poetry contest, up to the grand Disney-themed parade that closes the celebrations on Tuesday evening. A genuine opportunity to discover Luras and its traditions.

Festa Patronale Luras 2026 Programme

The 2026 Festa Patronale in Luras unfolds over four days, from Saturday 3 to Tuesday 6 October, alternating moments of civic celebration — concerts, games and shows — with an intense calendar of religious celebrations featuring Holy Masses and processions in honour of the town’s three patrons.

Concerts, sport and shows in the square

On the evening of Saturday 3 October, after the flags return to church from Piazzale Eni, the civic festival opens at 22:00 on Via Nazionale with the Fred De Palma concert, followed by a DJ set from Claudio Damigella.

Sunday 4 October afternoon is devoted to families, with pirate-themed games in the square («Il Galeone dei Pirati», 15:30) and, at 16:00, a football match between S.S. Lauras and Ittiri at the Stadio Limbara; in the evening, at 18:00, traditional guitar singing by Emanuele Bazzoni, Daniele Giallara and Franco Figus livens up Via Nuchis, while at 21:30 Via Nazionale hosts a «90s»-themed music night.

On Monday 5 October, from 15:30, there is space for the youngest guests with inflatables, face painting and group games, enlivened by special guest Spiderman in an acrobatic show; at 19:30 the town celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Coro Su Bubugnulu with the evening «Trent’anni di emozioni», hosted by Giuliano Marongiu with guests Maria Luisa Congiu, Sandro and Laura Fresi.

The civic programme closes on Tuesday 6 October with the Olimpiadi del Patrono children’s games (15:30: three-legged race, relay, sack race and tug of war), the improvised poetry contest at 17:00 with Bruno Agus, Giuseppe Porcu and Dionigi Bitti accompanied by the Tenore di Orgosolo choir, and finally, at 18:00, the grand Disney-themed parade that travels from Piazzale Eni to the Via Nazionale stage for the closing show.

Holy Masses and processions

The religious programme opens on Saturday 3 October at 18:00 with solemn vespers and Holy Mass, with liturgical accompaniment by the Coro Su Bubugnulu.

On Sunday 4 October, after the 8:30 Mass, the solemn Mass of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated at 10:00, with the homily by Don Paolo Pala and liturgical accompaniment by the Coro Su Bubugnulu. A solemn procession follows, accompanied by the «Città di Tempio Pausania» marching band and folk groups in traditional Sardinian costumes:

On Monday 5 October, after the morning Mass, the 10:00 solemn Mass is dedicated to the Madonna del Buon Cammino, with the homily by Don Umberto Deriu; the following procession is accompanied by the «Città di Tempio Pausania» marching band and the Mini Folk Tamponeddu.

The celebrations close on Tuesday 6 October with the solemn Mass of Saint Francis, at 10:00, with the homily by Don Alessandro Piga; here too the procession is accompanied by the marching band and the Mini Folk Tamponeddu.

History and Traditions

The devotion behind the Festa Patronale in Luras is rooted in the history of the Chiesa di Nostra Signora del Rosario, a church built in exposed granite blocks at the end of the 16th century by the priest Giorgio Scano, replacing the old parish church of San Giacomo, which had fallen into disrepair and was demolished in 1765 by order of Bishop Pietro Paolo Carta. Inside, the church still houses three paintings of artistic merit, including a Mannerist Madonna of the Rosary dating from the 17th century, while the façade bears a marble statue of the Madonna and two marble lions, likely remnants of an even older place of worship.

Luras also preserves a distinctive linguistic identity: although it lies at the heart of Gallura, its inhabitants traditionally speak a Logudorese Sardinian dialect rather than the Gallurese spoken in neighbouring towns, a linguistic enclave that reflects the town’s ancient ties to inland Sardinia, when it belonged to the Giudicato of Gallura before passing under Pisan rule and, from 1324, Aragonese rule.

The territory also holds important prehistoric remains, with four Neolithic dolmens including the famous Dolmen di Ladas, among the best preserved in all of Sardinia. The Festa Patronale, with its three devotions and folk groups in traditional costume, renews the bond between the community of Luras and these ancient roots every year.
