Autunno in Barbagia
Autunno in Barbagia is the travelling festival that since 1996 has brought life to dozens of villages in Barbagia and surrounding areas between September and December: every weekend a different village opens its cortes, the stone courtyards of its traditional houses, turning them into open-air workshops of flavours, crafts and music.
Nuoro is the provincial capital and the cultural heart of Sardinian Barbagia. The city is inextricably linked with Grazia Deledda, the first Italian writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature (1926), and is home to the ISRE Costume Museum (Istituto Superiore Regionale Etnografico), which holds one of the richest collections of traditional Sardinian dress. The MAN — Museo d’Arte della Provincia di Nuoro is one of the island’s leading museums of modern and contemporary art. During Autunno in Barbagia, Nuoro opens the courtyards of its historic centre — especially the Rione Seuna district and the neighbourhoods around the Basilica di San Salvatore — turning them into a living space of crafts, flavours and Sardinian cultural identity.
