Urzulei tra montagne e tradizioni 2026: what to expect

In mid-November Urzulei opens its streets for a weekend devoted to the mountain culture of Sardinia. "Urzulei tra montagne e tradizioni" (Urzulei between mountains and traditions) is an event of traditions, music and entertainment launched in 2025 by the Pro Loco and the Municipality, bringing to this Ogliastra village some of the best-loved names in Sardinian folk music and dozens of folk groups in traditional dress. The 2026 edition is expected on the weekend of 14 and 15 November: dates and the official programme will be confirmed by the organisers. At the first edition the mornings were devoted to craft stalls and a food and wine trail, with hands-on workshops on local traditions, while in the afternoon the square filled with organetti, accordions, tenores and polyphonic choirs, along with performances by folk groups from Lula, Villagrande, Orosei, Oliena, Tortolì, Tertenia and the home group. On Sunday morning walkers set off from Piazza Fontana for an excursion into the Supramonte of Urzulei, followed by an afternoon of dancing, traditional Sardinian masks and choral singing. A chance to see the traditional dress of Ogliastra and Barbagia up close and to discover one of the island's most authentic villages outside the summer season.

From Olbia and Nuoro head to Dorgali and then south along the SS125, passing above the Gorropu Gorge. From Sassari and Alghero it is best to reach Nuoro via the SS131 and SS131 DCN and continue to Dorgali. The last stretch is a winding mountain road: in November drive carefully, especially in rain or fog and in the evening.

🚌 Train and bus

Urzulei has no railway station: it is served by ARST buses along the SS125 towards Tortolì and towards Dorgali and Nuoro. Services are few, reduced at weekends and absent in the evening: to attend the evening shows a car is practically essential.

History and traditions of Urzulei tra montagne e tradizioni

Urzulei, Orthullè in Sardinian, is a small village in Ogliastra perched on the slopes of the Supramonte, more than 500 metres above sea level. Its territory is among the wildest in Sardinia: it includes the Codula di Luna, the Gorropu Gorge and the woods of holm oaks and ancient yews climbing towards Monte Gruttas.

It is from this bond between the mountain and the community that "Urzulei tra montagne e tradizioni" (Urzulei between mountains and traditions) was born: an event of traditions, music and entertainment promoted by the Pro Loco with the Municipality of Urzulei and the support of the Sardinia Region. The first edition took place on 15 and 16 November 2025, with artistic direction and presentation by Giuliano Marongiu.

On that occasion the village's new folk group, Santu Giorghi de Orthullè, made its debut, revived after years thanks to the commitment of young people and families: a large ballu tundu in the square welcomed the guest groups who came from all over the island in their traditional dress.

The programme weaves together canto a tenore, polyphonic choirs, the organetto and accordion, traditional Sardinian masks and dancing, along with craft stalls, a food and wine trail and an excursion into the Supramonte of Urzulei: a way to discover the village in autumn, away from the summer tourist crowds.
